Small Witch Hats

I made these vintage looking witch hats for my Fall craft market. I ran across these foam trees at Hobby Lobby and decided to use them to make some hats.

I also had these 4" flat wood rounds that I decided to use as the base. These are from Hobby Lobby as well.

I placed the foam tree in top if it to make sure the size would be correct.

I started by tracing my wood circles out onto a few different fabrics. I used drop cloth and a black fabric that I already had on hand. Double your fabric when you go to cut out the circle so you have a top and a bottom piece.

When cutting around the circle I had traced I left about a 1/4" extra arou d the edges to allow for hot gluing them together onto the round and to fray the edges of the material. I placed some hot glue onto wood round and placed it onto my first fabric circle making sure it wad in the middle.

I then glued the second piece of fabric onto the other side.

I went back around the edges and spread the fabric and places a line of hot glue all yhe way around the edges and pinching the fabric shut all the way around. Now our wood round is completely covered in fabric.

I took some rough sand paper and tattered the edges of the fabric all the way around.

Now its time to start on the cone. I wrapped it in the same fabric that I covered the base in and cut out enough to cover it completely around. Be sure to leave a little bit of fabric at the bottom of the cone so you can tuck the edges and glue them flat. Also if you want a top that folds over leave extra at the top too.

You can see in this licture that I left a little fabric at the bottom of the cone while I began rolling my cone up into the fabric while gluing it onto the cone.

When you have the cone covered cut of the remainder and glue down the edge flat.

I also glued the fabric into a long tip of my hat.

I folded it over and placed a bead of hot glue under the fold to hold it into place.

Next go back and fold over the edges at the bottom of the cone and hot glue them flat. You may have trim some of the excess fabric before you glue.

Now you can hot glue your top to the bottom round piece.

Begun decorating! This one I trimmed in some tulle fabric ribbon I had on hand. I also sewed a bell onto the top of each hat and added some stamped word tags onto them. Decorate them how you like!

My black hat I decided to make higher for display. I cut off a piece of an old spindle to use. You could use a candlestick ad well. I cut out some circles of tulle fabric and placed that on top of the spindle and glued it down. I also tied around it with some jute to kind. Of make it look like it was tied arou mnd the witches neck. Then I hot glued the hat on top. This one was my favorite one! It really made it look more like a witch was wearing the hat!
